A mother language shapes identity, culture and thought to every human. It preserves traditions and strengthens community bonds, making it essential for personal growth and cultural continuity across generations. International Mother Language Day is an observance that showcases the importance of mother tongues in preserving cultural identity and knowledge. The world is home to over 7,000 languages, each carrying its own history and worldview. February 21st is observed as International Mother Language Day to honor and promote the preservation of linguistic diversity and cultural heritage worldwide. It is fascinating to note that many languages trace their origins back to Sanskrit, a foundational linguistic source.
To honor this day, the Cultural Club Aroop conducted a group discussion on the theme "Language as a Tool for Social Empowerment," on 21st February 2026. During the discussion, students actively debated and affirmed the power of mother language in enabling social empowerment. They explored how mastering language can enhance education, participations and self-expression, validating the idea that linguistic skills are crucial for overcoming social inequalities and empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to society. The discussion delved into how language empowers societies by enabling expression, preserving history and promoting unity. Historical insights shared during the event illustrated the depth of knowledge embedded in various languages, reinforcing the idea that language is a treasure of cultural heritage.
Approximately 100 students participated in teams, engaging deeply to uphold the value of every native language to be recognized and respected across the globe. Encouraging appreciation for linguistic diversity, International Mother Language Day calls for its protection.
