A gymnasium, also known as a gym, is a covered location for gymnastics, athletics, and gymnastic services. The word is derived from the ancient Greek gymnasium. They are commonly found in athletic and fitness centers, and as activity and learning spaces in educational institutions. "Gym" is also slang for "fitness center", which is often an area for indoor recreation. Opening a gym is a first-of-its-kind step. The College has established separate hall in the year 2011 for gymnasium as exercise increases focus and concentration of the students. Physical activity is good for mental health. Experts believe that exercise releases chemicals in brain that make one feel good. A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being is very essential in any stage of students’ life, which is the sowing stage that decides the future course. The gym at the college would have all kind of facilities in line with other private or government gyms in the city. The students as well as faculty will be enrolled in the gyms, which will function from 6:00am to 8:00am & 5:00pm to 7:00pm daily. A physical trainer hired to provide training to the students.
Regular exercise can also boost self-esteem and helps to concentrate, sleep, look and feel better. Making all gyms and fitness centers in College accessible to students could benefit their health and the College. Students have to go off campus if they want to work out, unless they are taking a health class or are on sports teams. If the gyms and fitness centers at College become available for students, it could provide them with a closer place to work out. Having accessible gyms on campus could encourage students to attend the gym regularly, which would benefit their health. Students who are interested in playing basketball or volleyball while they wait for their next class, or just for fun could use the basketball and volleyball gym. It would be a more affordable option for students. The average cost of a monthly gym membership is Rs.1000. There are students who cannot afford to spend that much for a gym membership. The gyms are currently reserved for health classes and athletic teams. In order to use them, an instructor, adviser or coach must be present, to ensure everyone is using the machines correctly for safety purposes.
Students welcomed the move. "I cannot believe it! We will have a gym in the college. We used to spend money at private gyms to work out. The gym at the college would not only provide good training but also save pocket money of students.
The top health and wellness benefits students attributed to their regular participation in campus gym are Feeling of wellbeing, Overall health, Fitness level, Physical strength, Stress management, Athletic ability, Weight control, Self-confidence, Balance/coordination and Concentration.
